ANDREA NOLÈ
hūmānitās
Humanitas divergit (in Latin, humanity separates/diversifies), is a term coined by Descartes referring to one of his Ideae Idyllicae, which is about if everyone without exception desires something in their heart, a greater force would make it come true. Naturally, he concluded that if there is anyone who (for any reason) would not do so, this idyllic idea would never be realized. He called the fact of eternal human disagreement the Humanitas divergit, currently referring to the lack of consensus in voting in which one of the positions is common sense.
This series of work is part of a residency project by Italian artist Andrea Nolè, invited by Bitamine Faktoria to create a project which is inspired by the Basque cultural context. The artist has chosen to make a series of urban installation, seeking an active participation of the local communities. The series aims to develop a discourse, starting from an analysis of a culture, and completing it by reflecting on human behaviors in common.
Zure arazoa guztion arazoa da
In its conceptual form, this work conveys a message that is addressed to the Basque population (including the Spanish and French people), in a from of a typical advertising poster. The intention is to break the border that prevents the direct communication between the Basque community, in a positive manner.
Ubi maior minor cessat
Ubi maior minor cessat - DEF. Where the greater is there, the lesser ceases (or becomes negligible) (Legal Term - In the presence of a more important person, the less important one loses relevance. Originally it belongs to the Roman legal matrix)
Ubi maior minor cessat wants to describe a cultural situation that belongs to all cultures and generations. However, this concept is also relevant in the context where the dominant culture prevails over the other.
Ego
In this work the word 'ego' emerges from the wall, breaking the surface of the wall itself. The work welcomes the reflection on the ego and whether its value can test the stability of an identity; for example in the case when it comes to find a solution to a community conflict. Focusing on our own motivations does not lead us to understand the motivations of those who are different; having an empathy towards others can help us to have a broader vision.
