THE COT
The sixth edition of the HAU BASQUE TRADITIONAL OBJECTS DESIGN COMPETITION proposed the cot as a piece to be reviewed, a small bed for babies and children. It is usually shaped like an elongated drawer and is fitted at the ends, at the bottom, with two curved pieces so that it can be easily rocked. Many cots have bars on the sides and in some cases one of the long sides can be lowered for better access. Generally, traditional cradles are made of more or less noble woods and in some cases are made of chestnut basketry or wickerwork. There are some with a canopy at head height to protect the child from draughts and there are also some with a small pole to hang a cloth to protect the child from mosquitoes (Text: Fermín Leizaola).
The jury was made up of Fermín Leizaola Calvo (director of the Ethnography Department of the Aranzadi Science Society), Elisabeth Urrutia Bea (industrial designer), Agurtzane Garai Ibarluzea (head of mediation at San Telmo Museoa), Xabier Llordes (head of the Professional Association of Industrial, Graphic and Space Designers of the Basque Country) and Xabier Llordes (head of the Professional Association of Industrial, Graphic and Space Designers of the Basque Country), EIDE), Enrique Arrillaga (Founder of Muebles LUFE), Nagore Lauroba, coordinator of the Industrial Design degree (Mondragon Unibertsitatea-Goi Eskola Politeknikoa) and Helga Massetani Piemonte (Director of Bitamine Faktoria) awarded the prize to the KABI project, presented by ICIAR SÁNCHEZ PARRA.
The KABI project skilfully and sensitively combines the functional and formal aspects of the object. Sustainability is highlighted as the axis of the project and although it proposes a sober innovation with respect to the object, it stands out sufficiently in the way it is used, which gives it a contemporary air in keeping with the needs of today's society.
The way in which the analysis and the proposal are included in a very complete and elaborated report is valued, in addition to having two models corresponding to different phases of the study. It takes into account the incorporation of new tools such as apps for access to the rental and reuse of the object. And it is considered as a viable project to be introduced in the market.
Bitamine and San Telmo Museoa, organisers of the competition, would like to thank the collaborating institutions, the members of the Jury and the people who took part for their interest in this edition.
