FRONTIÈRE - Cross-border artistic practices
FRONTIÈRE - Cross-border artistic practices, an event in collaboration with the Montreal artists' centre DARE-DARE and Bitamine Faktoria. This meeting takes place on the occasion of the launch of the publication Frontière, which reviews TOPO's thematic programming for 2019-2022. Helga Massetani, from Bitamine Faktoria, will present the project Atlas Emocional del Bidasoa. Sylvie Cotton, from DARE-DARE, will present the Satellite project and its publication.
PROJECTS.
FRONTIÈRE by TOPO.
Under the theme of the frontier, TOPO has created a cycle of exhibitions and online projects from 2019 to 2022. Rooted in human history and still very current, the theme brings together several issues raised by TOPO, political as well as social and technological.
The Frontier programme includes three thematic cycles with three female authors and art historians: Nuria Carton de Grammont, Paule Mackrous and Mirna Abiad-Boyadjian. To enrich the reflection, four other specialists address the notion of the border more broadly according to different approaches linked to their field of research: Ricard Zapata Barrero (politics), Chantal Pontbriand (aesthetics), Jean-Dominique Leccia (psychiatry) and David Jhave Johnston (technology).
The paper publication, a map that traces the works of the 10 artists proposed by TOPO in the framework of the programme, is expanded on the web with essays and multimedia content (essays, videos and podcasts).
SATELLITE by DARE-DARE.
"This publication traces the first trajectories of a programme of cross-border artistic explorations initiated in 2011 by the artist-run centre DARE-DARE as a satellite of its home territory in Montreal. More than just a retrospective visual overview and a presentation of works produced in three very different urban contexts (Detroit, Tijuana, Mexico City), the book proposes a series of recent observations of the artists and host partners to relive their vivid memories, retrace the path of thought and experience, reveal the imprint on creative practice and intellectual reflection, or even the repercussions on career or artistic mission."

Bitamine Faktoria's Emotional Atlas of Bidasoa.
This publication is the continuation of the research carried out in 2019 within the project "Emotional cartography of Bidasoa". It is a series of notebooks accompanied by the work of the illustrator Elena Odriozola, which highlight significant social aspects. These ten fascicles tell the stories of a geographical area - that of the river Bidasoa - elegantly written by María José Noain Maura in a language accessible to all audiences.
Helga Massetani's visit is possible thanks to the support of the Etxepare Institute and the Ministère des Relations internationales du Québec, within the framework of the cultural cooperation agreement between Québec and Euskadi.

Congreso del Observatorio de la Cultura Turística Sostenible // COSTA
El Congreso del Observatorio de la Cultura Turística Sostenible // COSTA se presenta como
una plataforma de conocimiento, interpretación y diálogo interdisciplinar para reimaginar el turismo desde una perspectiva crítica y plural. Este encuentro reúne a investigadores, artistas y profesionales del sector para analizar el impacto del turismo desde una perspectiva ecosocial. El congreso busca generar nuevas narrativas que superen el actual modelo extractivista y propongan alternativas responsables que integren innovación, memoria y la transformación ecosocial.
El Congreso del Observatorio COSTA se estructura en torno a cuatro ejes fundamentales: (Ciencia-Arte, Turismo-Sostenibilidad) con el objetivo de profundizar en la producción de conocimiento del imaginario turístico. Promovemos la creación como territorio de imaginación radical, la sostenibilidad como marco ético y la exploración de nuevas metodologías de investigación como experimento político. Este Observatorio está formado por un grupo de investigación interdisciplinar abierto a la integración de voces minoritarias o
microrrelatos para constituir en su conjunto una cátedra colectiva. Invitamos a investigadores, artistas, ecologistas, profesionales del sector turístico y la comunicación a participar en este encuentro para contribuir a una visión más justa e inclusiva del turismo en
el siglo XXI.
Hormigón de fondo
A partir de su investigación en la beca Desplazamenduak / Desplazamientos #1, Raquel Meyers propone un ensayo expandido que desmonta el mito del progreso mostrando el hormigón como símbolo de control, turismo depredador y urbanismo excluyente. Entre Palma e Irun, construye una arqueología emocional y política del capitalismo tardío: cemento, expulsión, precariedad. Su obra combina archivo, teletexto y memoria para revelar el desarrollo como un relato de desigualdad.
Más que soluciones, ofrece un gesto crítico desde los márgenes: una denuncia del despojo de lo común y un llamado urgente a imaginar otras formas de habitar y construir ciudad.
Raquel Meyers es artista visual que trabaja con tecnologías obsoletas y estética textual para explorar memoria, control y resistencia digital.
Helga Massetani es la Directora de Bitamine Kultur Elkartea junto a Casa Planas impulsan en 2024 un programa de becas para investigadoras residentes en Euskadi y Baleares destinado a desarrollar proyectos que reflexionen sobre el impacto sociocultural del turismo tomando como punto de partida el archivo Planas Archive.
Proyectos de investigación artística vinculado con el Planas Archive realizados en 2025.
La exposición estará abierta al público de forma gratuíta el viernes 24 a partir de las 20h y el sábado día 25 de

Piedra rima con hiedra, mármol rima con árbol is a visual essay on the advance of the red palm weevil and the loss of this colonial symbol of the Indian palm trees in the landscape, as a revelation of the history of our time. The Basque hymn Agur Jauna, in its musical, textual and symbolic dimensions, will be taken as the centre of the conceptualisation. This emblematic piece of Euskal Herria is a hymn of great symbolic weight in our culture. In the progress of research from artistic practice on monuments and biological plagues, it has been observed how decolonial readings continue to exercise an extractivist and colonial role over plants. While they have always travelled, we know that our influence has accelerated their dispersal and now also their disease. However, conservation and care currently only takes into account the native flora. Therefore, the disruptive and symbolic capacities of the hymn on these exotic plants will be used in the production of an installation.

Rakel Gómez Vázquez is an artist and researcher, with a degree in Fine Arts and a master's degree in INCREARTE from the UPV/EHU. She has completed her training at the Accademia di Belli Arti in Florence and the Universidad Di Tella in Buenos Aires; she is currently writing her doctoral thesis. She is a founding member of the art research collective Armar; she is a member of TXT lab and the research group AKMEKA (Arte, Kultura eta Media), and also collaborates with theSIA. In her career as an artist, she has received several grants and prizes for creative work.
Her production understands creation as research and is articulated as an expanded documentation. She explores the landscape as a cultural construction, which portrays political-social issues of memory and identity, investigating the colonial influence on the visual and symbolic construction of origin and identity, and analysing its validity and projection in the landscape. In addition to consulting archives, libraries and visits to museums, he combines fieldwork and the tools with which he habitually develops practical work through drawing, engraving, installation, photography and photosensitive analogue techniques such as cyanotype.

MICHEL HUNEAULT
Michel Huneault (1976) is a documentary photographer and visual artist. Her work focuses on issues related to development, trauma, migration and other complex geographical realities such as climate and health changes. Michel holds a master's degree from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was Rotary Peace Fellow, investigating the role of collective memory after large traumatic situations. Before focusing on photography, he worked in international development for over ten years.
During his creative residency, Michel Huneault worked in collaboration with the sound artist Johann Mazé (France). Following further work on this topic -De la Frontière (2021), Roxham (2017), Monnaie d'échange (2016) and Occident Express (2015)- Michel continued his research on the idea of "border", this time working on both sides of the Bidasoa River, as well as in the Pyrenean mountain ports of the region. During this period he laid the foundation for a new work that deals with the multiple and simultaneous realities of a place/time that can be banal for the legal European citizen, idle for the tourist or artist who is by the way, but tense for the immigrants trying to cross it with the police presence dedicated to that cause. The artistic piece, in the post-production phase, will be presented publicly in the summer of 2023, in Canada, in the Basque Country and on the Internet.

ESTIBALIZ SADABA MURGUIA
The domestic sphere is one to which women have historically been relegated. Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía's work aims to make visible the socially invisible work that women carry out in this space. In this sense, the aim is to bring it out into the public light, into the "agora".
The research, materialised in images and methodologically projected through actions, develops on the genesis of the very idea of the "domestic", in opposition to the idea of "public space", since it is there where the circumstances that have made possible the isolation, confinement and disciplining of women for centuries are to be found.
The confinement of women to the space of the home is the logical consequence of being part of a patriarchal social structure. For this reason, the aim is to observe, question and work on women's relationship with the domestic sphere. As in previous projects, the artist uses the languages of drawing, sound and video, writing, action/performance and photography (the latter being the ones used on this occasion). The working methodology consists of deploying a wide constellation of images as a result of the sum of these techniques. The aim of the action is to subvert this reclusion, taking the struggle out of the kitchen and the bedroom and into the streets.

Iván Gómez Gutiérrez's “La caja y el secreto” has been the project chosen within the framework of the EAS-EZE programme for the internationalisation of contemporary Basque art. The artist will talk about the relationship between the notions of Care and Conservation, taking as a starting point the architectures intended to house heritage collections.

OPEN CALLS ARE SUSPENDED
Due to the current state of alarm ordered by the Spanish Government to face the health crisis caused by the Covid-19, Bitamine Faktoria suspends all open calls and leaves applications on hold.
We hope to reopen the reception of applications once this exceptional period has ended, which forces us to confine ourselves and prevents us from regular work. Applications received to date will be taken into account when the process restarts.
