BIENALSUR
An expansive proposal for contemporary art, culture and reflection.
From the south of the world we make BIENALSUR, organised by the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), a public university in Argentina, the Foro del Sur Foundation and a network of public and private institutions in more than 80 cities in 30 countries.
It is a different kind of biennial: decentralised, democratic, horizontal and humanistic, embracing the issues of today's world.
From its Km 0 at MUNTREF (Museums of the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero) Hotel de Inmigrantes venue in the City of Buenos Aires, to Tokyo, BIENALSUR maps out a new cartography for contemporary art that spans 18,370 kilometres, simultaneously connecting art spaces, creators, audiences and communities from all continents.
As of 2015, a series of Global South meetings were held that gave rise to a dynamic project rooted in dialogues, exchanges and presentations making up a diverse and sustained public programme. BIENALSUR was subsequently built on this foundation.
The first edition of BIENALSUR was held in 2017, featuring the participation of more than 400 artists across approximately 80 venues in 34 cities spanning 16 countries. In 2019, the map extended its reach, encompassing 112 venues in 47 cities in 21 countries. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic in 2021, the biennial took place in 120 venues across 48 cities in 24 countries of the Americas, Asia and Europe. Over 1800 artists from all over the world participated throughout the first three editions. In 2023 the fourth edition of BIENALSUR took place in more than 70 cities in 28 countries on 5 continents. With the participation of more than 700 artists and 64 curators.
PROJECTS IN WHICH I PARTICIPATE
DIEGO VIVANCO
IF IT MOVES, IT’S ALIVE
This project is born from the fascination for flags and their inherent usage as an element of communication and representation of a person or a group of people. Flags are believed to exist from the 8th century B.C. arised with the birth of Roman civilization. It is surprising and impressive to think that a system as rudimentary as a piece of cloth of different shapes and colours has been so present in the history and awakens even so many emotions and conflicts. Through video, photography and installation "If it moves, It's alive" questions the flag and its different functions, suggesting reflections and examines the themes of communication and cultural identity.
Diego Vivanco (Bilbao, 1988) graduated in Fine Arts, specialized in audiovisual art int the UPV/EHU in 2011. He possesses two postgraduate degrees in Germany; one in media art in Leipzig and the other in time-based art in the city of Halle. During his artistic career he has been awarded with different prizes, scholarships and international artistic residencies, among them the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Salzamt in Linz (Austria) stand out. In 2013 he co-founded the artistic collective ‘Situation room’ with which he continues to produce site-specific installations. Since 2008 he has presented his work regularly in more than 10 countries, in renowned institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao or the Eigen Art contemporary art gallery in Leipzig.
Through video, installation and performance art, Diego Vivanco's conceptual artistic practice questions social, political and cultural contexts, pointing out their areas of tension. This investigation transforms his reality into a tremendous factor of influence, which drives him to constant search for new environments. His work is a continuous invitation to question the established.
Diego Vivanco's project "If it moves, It's alive" has been selected by the jury formed by the Bitamine Faktoria team along with the teacher, researcher and essayist Cecilia Guerra Lage; the composer and professor at the National University of the Arts Gustavo de Leonardis; and the curator Leyre Goikoetxea Martínez.

ESTIBALIZ SADABA MURGUIA
The domestic sphere is one to which women have historically been relegated. Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía's work aims to make visible the socially invisible work that women carry out in this space. In this sense, the aim is to bring it out into the public light, into the "agora".
The research, materialised in images and methodologically projected through actions, develops on the genesis of the very idea of the "domestic", in opposition to the idea of "public space", since it is there where the circumstances that have made possible the isolation, confinement and disciplining of women for centuries are to be found.
The confinement of women to the space of the home is the logical consequence of being part of a patriarchal social structure. For this reason, the aim is to observe, question and work on women's relationship with the domestic sphere. As in previous projects, the artist uses the languages of drawing, sound and video, writing, action/performance and photography (the latter being the ones used on this occasion). The working methodology consists of deploying a wide constellation of images as a result of the sum of these techniques. The aim of the action is to subvert this reclusion, taking the struggle out of the kitchen and the bedroom and into the streets.

NAGORE LEGARRETA ALCELAY
“EL RÍO NO ES UN LUGAR” (‘THE RIVER IS NOT A PLACE’) by Nagore Legarreta Alcelay has been selected as part of the EAS-EZE programme for the internationalisation of contemporary Basque art. The artist proposes to turn our gaze towards the river and for it to return its gaze to the current civilisation, as well as establishing a dialogue with the rivers that were once buried, giving light to landscapes hidden in the city of Buenos Aires itself.
The jury was formed by Peio Aguirre, Diana Wechsler and Bitamine.
We thank all the artists who have presented their projects in this edition!
The EAS-EZE programme is supported by the Etxepare Institute.
